{"id":1230,"date":"2022-04-12T17:56:11","date_gmt":"2022-04-12T20:56:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/?p=1230"},"modified":"2024-12-22T12:17:49","modified_gmt":"2024-12-22T15:17:49","slug":"moisture-in-3d-printing-filaments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/en\/moisture-in-3d-printing-filaments\/","title":{"rendered":"Moisture in 3D printing filaments: Main consequences"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The main consequences of humidity in the filaments are<\/strong>: Layers that do not adhere, Threads, Irregular walls, Leftover filament in the form of bubbles or blobs, Cracks or Hollows in the thin walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many 3D printing filaments have hygroscopic properties, which means they have the ability to absorb water vapor molecules and cause problems with your 3D prints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humidity refers to the amount of water vapor in the environment, this can easily spoil your filaments, if you do not have some precautions when storing them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do I know if my filament has moisture?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wet filament prints can have strings, non-stick layers, uneven, brittle thin walls; air bubbles and layer delamination may appear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Heat Hotend to the temperature that corresponds to your filament.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Load the filament until it comes out of the nozzle.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If there is presence of <strong>&quot;bursting bubbles&quot;<\/strong> coming out of the nozzle, as well as the oil when it boils and produces that particular sound, it is because <strong>your filament has moisture<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is very possible that if you leave your filaments placed in the filament holder of the printer, or stacked on a shelf <strong>have moisture<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the case of filaments like <strong>PetG<\/strong> either <strong>Nylon<\/strong> you will notice that the filament is a little softer than normal. Unlike <strong>PLA<\/strong> which may have other symptoms, such as splitting and breaking out of nowhere. (cracks, gaps occur)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The layers do not adhere well. (they get off)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Printed parts lose hardness and break easily.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A surplus is produced in the form of bubbles, or &quot;blobs.&quot;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can favor stringing, or \u201cthreads\u201d in your prints<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Blockages in the Hotend, due to an increase in the diameter of the filament.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your filament degrades quickly with microcracks.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not all filaments absorb the same amount of moisture from the environment. This changes according to the type of material, for example: The <strong>Nylon<\/strong>, <strong>PVA<\/strong> and <strong>flexible filaments<\/strong> they are more likely to accumulate moisture, perhaps overnight. PLA on the other hand can absorb less moisture than the aforementioned materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1) Popping sound when printing<\/strong>, &quot;Bubbles that burst&quot;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This happens because those small water droplets contained in the filament suddenly evaporate when passing through the hot nozzle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This causes the filament to burst to release the water vapor contained within.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"445\" src=\"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Humedad-en-los-filamentos-de-impresion-3D-sonidos-de-estallidos-o-burbujas-que-explotan-al-imprimir.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1315\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Filament with burst air bubble<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2) The extrusion lines are irregular. But this can happen for various reasons, such as spool tangles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You will notice when after re-feeding the extruder with the filament, <strong>this is cut again<\/strong>, even while placing it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to dry filament with humidity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Probably the easiest for <strong>dry filament<\/strong> is to introduce the filament in your domestic oven, set the temperature at 45 \u00b0C (for PLA) for 4 hours until the <strong>humidity<\/strong> evaporate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What to do if your filaments have already absorbed moisture? Don&#039;t throw them away, or run out to buy new rolls. Better learn all the ways there are to dry filament and keep the ones you already have dry. Keeping your filaments dry, free of moisture, can help your filaments not degrade and maintain the hardness and quality they had when you bought them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To dry filament, you need to extract all the moisture they have absorbed. For this you will need some tools or methods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1- 3D filament dryer<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"445\" src=\"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Humedad-en-los-filamentos-de-impresion-3D-Secador-de-filamento-3d-Sunlu.jpg\" alt=\"3D Filament Dryers\" class=\"wp-image-1300\" style=\"width:800px;height:445px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">3D Filament Dryer<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This may be one of the most effective and safe ways to extract moisture from your filaments, since these devices are specifically made to fulfill this function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These types of boxes can keep the filament dry, free of moisture, since they have their own integrated heater, to which you must set the desired temperature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once the dryer has finished its work you can use the filament already free of moisture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In some cases, this type of dryer can be used in conjunction with the printer, since you can place the filament roll inside, which will have rollers so that the filament can rotate as the printer consumes it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can see the different models and prices of filament dryers on Amazon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>I leave you here a list of the best-selling filament dryers<\/em><\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2- Kitchen oven<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"445\" src=\"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Humedad-en-los-filamentos-de-impresion-3D-secar-filamento-en-el-horno.jpg\" alt=\"Oven for drying 3D filament\" class=\"wp-image-1311\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">drying filament in the oven<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It may not be the most effective and safe way to dry your filaments, but it is one of the most accessible items that anyone can have and have at home without spending money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At this point I would like to make a clarification: <strong>I think you have to be very careful and give special importance to the issue of security<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-tomato-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Never turn on the oven and leave your filaments unattended, as you could completely ruin your filament rolls, or even start a fire.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was just a clarification, since I consider it very important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In your oven you will need to set the temperature based on the type of material you want to dry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>PLA 45 \u00b0C (113\u00b0F) =&gt; 4 hours<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>ABS 60 \u00b0C (140\u00b0F) =&gt; 2 hours<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>PETG 65 \u00b0C (149\u00b0F) =&gt; 2 hours<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Nylon 70 \u00b0C (158\u00b0F) =&gt; 12 hours<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course <strong>not all ovens will come with a temperature gauge<\/strong>In these cases, you should purchase a separate temperature gauge (which is hung inside the oven) to have an idea of how many degrees there are inside and thus be able to regulate its temperature.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"211\" height=\"270\" src=\"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Humedad-en-los-filamentos-de-impresion-3D-termometro-para-horno.jpg\" alt=\"Oven thermometer\" class=\"wp-image-1304\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/44f6RuL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">Oven Thermometer with Foot Dial, Stainless Steel (opens on Amazon)<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few things to keep in mind:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Remember to take everything out of the oven BEFORE turning it on.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>After turning it on, wait for it to reach the desired temperature.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Once ready, place the filament on a flat surface.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The oven gets very hot. DO NOT BURN YOURSELF<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>If the temperature is too high, THE ROLL WILL BE DEFORMED.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>When you have finished using the oven, DO NOT FORGET TO TURN IT OFF.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3- Food Dehydrator<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"445\" src=\"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Humedad-en-los-filamentos-de-impresion-3D-Deshidratador-de-alimentos.jpg\" alt=\"Food dehydrator\" class=\"wp-image-1303\" style=\"width:800px;height:445px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Food dehydrator<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A food dehydrator is ideal for <strong>&quot;dry off&quot;<\/strong> filaments, since in many of them the temperature can be regulated, thus achieving the same task as that of the kitchen oven, but perhaps with a little more security, since there is no fire involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on the country where you live you must <strong>analyze what is cheaper<\/strong>since in some places <strong>it may be cheaper to buy a filament dryer<\/strong> than a dehydrator<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Youtube channel: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@Bugeo3d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bugeo 3d<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre><div class=\"video-responsive\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mzJUKaalwfs?si=4-E5vQM_A0OKX2aE\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The options presented here, which have not been specifically designed to do the job of removing moisture from the filaments, may fail or have different temperatures than desired. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this reason I want to clarify that with these last 2 options (the kitchen oven and the food dehydrator) there must be <strong>a trial and error process<\/strong>, since nothing will be safe at 100%<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4- The heated bed of your 3D printer?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As I was writing this post I was watching on YouTube as someone <strong>suggested<\/strong> that the heated bed of our printer can be used as a method to dry filaments, since in many printers the temperature of the heated bed <strong>can go up to 110 degrees<\/strong> Celsius.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Will it be possible?<\/strong> I haven&#039;t really tried it, but I found it interesting and that&#039;s why <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">I wanted to tell them<\/span>. <strong>What do you think? filaments, humidity will play a trick on you, since the quality of your prints will be affected with different types of problems such as those already mentioned: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Rough or rough walls<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Layers that don&#039;t stick well or peel off<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An excess of threads in your filament has moisture <strong>dry it test<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>you can buy a <strong>filament dryer<\/strong>, Food dehydrator or use the kitchen oven to dry them (<strong>with great care and temperature control<\/strong>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Store your filament in an airtight container with moisture absorbent bags.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I invite you to read:
