{"id":2955,"date":"2022-11-08T18:37:37","date_gmt":"2022-11-08T21:37:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/?p=2955"},"modified":"2023-09-04T14:49:58","modified_gmt":"2023-09-04T17:49:58","slug":"how-to-activate-and-configure-smoothing-in-cura","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/en\/how-to-activate-and-configure-smoothing-in-cura\/","title":{"rendered":"How to activate and configure smoothing in Cura"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Anti-aliasing is a setting in the Cura settings that allows smooth surfaces to be obtained on the top layers of the printed model.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By activating this function in Cura, the nozzle will move hot over the last layer, thus leaving a smooth surface.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To activate smoothing in Cura <strong>Go to the \u201cTop or Bottom\u201d settings and check the \u201cEnable smoothing\u201d box<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once the box is activated, more options will appear that will allow you to change the default settings, in order to obtain the desired results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Iron only the top layer<\/strong>: Ironing will be done only on the last top layer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>smoothing pattern<\/strong>: Choose the ironing pattern of the upper layers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Smooth line spacing<\/strong>: determines the distance between the lines (line thickness).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>smoothing flow<\/strong>: Percentage of <strong>extruded material during smoothing<\/strong>, it can fill some cracks on the surface.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>straightening insert<\/strong>: Distance that must be maintained from the edge so that there are no jagged edges.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>smoothing speed<\/strong>: The speed of the smoothing can be changed to adjust the process.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"457\" height=\"716\" src=\"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Capas-superiores-e-inferiores-en-cura-habilitar-alisado-configuracion.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2714\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image: Enable smoothing in Cura, (default settings)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once activated it prints a test cube with the default settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How does it work<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>When finished printing the last layer, (the top layer) the nozzle again makes an extra stroke on the top layer, but this time making finer lines. With this it is possible to smooth the surface and possibly correct some cracks.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the end of the course, the upper surface will be completely smooth and opaque, leaving a better finish on the upper layers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For smoothing to work properly, the last layer must be good and well printed. That&#039;s why <strong>a minimum of 4 top coats are recommended<\/strong>, so that there are no gaps or cracks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To achieve smoothing, the nozzle must make much finer passes than normal (than those of the diameter of the nozzle) and extrude the right amount of material, so as not to leave an excess of plastic that harms the finish.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"445\" src=\"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Capas-superiores-e-inferiores-en-cura-habilitar-alisado-ejemplo.webp\" alt=\"Enable smoothing in cura\" class=\"wp-image-2715\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image: <strong>Comparison between an unsmoothed surface<\/strong> (left) <strong>and a smooth surface<\/strong> (right)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cura Smoothing Settings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Enabling smoothing irons all flat surfaces parallel to the heated bed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the event that you only want to smooth the last layer, then you must select <strong>Iron only the top layer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In smoothing pattern I recommend you choose <strong>Zig Zag<\/strong>, but you can do your own tests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now with the following options I recommend you leave the default options (for 0.4 nozzle) and <strong>print a test cube<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>smoothing pattern<\/strong>: Zig Zag.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Smooth line spacing<\/strong>: 0.1mm.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>smoothing flow<\/strong>: 10.0 %.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>straightening insert<\/strong>: 0.38mm.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>smoothing speed<\/strong>: 20.0mm\/s.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"445\" src=\"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Como-activar-y-configurar-el-alisado-en-cura-configuracion-predeterminada-ender-3.webp\" alt=\"Straightening ironing in cure\" class=\"wp-image-2963\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image: Cube Smoothed with default settings<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you see that it has gone well then you can try to print with that configuration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If not, then continue to experiment with increasing or decreasing the smoothing flow.
