{"id":3026,"date":"2022-11-15T22:24:20","date_gmt":"2022-11-16T01:24:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/?p=3026"},"modified":"2024-11-01T18:55:02","modified_gmt":"2024-11-01T21:55:02","slug":"skirt-edge-or-raft-which-to-use","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/en\/skirt-edge-or-raft-which-to-use\/","title":{"rendered":"Skirt Edge or Balsa What to use in Cure?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Skirt Edge or Raft are Cura settings that determine the type of adhesion to the build plate.<\/strong> Its correct use is of vital importance to have good quality 3D prints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Advanced users are already pretty clear on which one to use, but for those just starting out it can be a bit confusing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this publication I want to define and explain what are the differences between Falda Borde or Balsa to make it clear when to use them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is skirt in 3D printing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The skirt (also known as &quot;Skirt&quot; in English),<\/strong> <strong>is a continuous line printed around the 3D model, but not connected to the model<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This type of adhesion to the build plate is not functional with the model because there will be no connection between the two, but it will serve another purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"445\" src=\"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Falda-borde-o-balsa-impresion-3d-falda-impresa-.webp\" alt=\"Skirt Edge or Raft examples\" class=\"wp-image-3050\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Example of a 3D printed Skirt<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the 3D printed Skirt for?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>It is used to purge the filament through the extruder nozzle.<\/strong>, <strong>avoiding missing plastic when starting to print the model<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also when printing multiple laps, <strong>It is used to know if the printing plate is level<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The way to tell is to see if the lines are glued together.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"445\" src=\"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Falda-borde-o-balsa-impresion-3d-falda-impresa-cenital-.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3051\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Example of 5 laps of a 3D printed skirt<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In case the Skirt lines are not glued to each other, or if they peel off when printing, or if you can&#039;t see them because the nozzle is too close to the bed, it means that the print bed needs to be leveled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is a very used trick when printing because <strong>with only 3 or 5 turns of the skirt you can know if the printer bed is correctly leveled<\/strong> <strong>or if you need to level it again<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"445\" src=\"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Falda-borde-o-balsa-impresion-3d-falda-impresa-ejemplo-.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3052\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Correctly glued skirt lines<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How reliable are Skirt lines: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the lines are glued to the build plate and are also glued to each other, you could walk away without looking at the first layer and when you come back the model would be printed perfectly, (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">that important<\/span> is to have the bed well leveled)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Skirt options are<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Printing Plate Adhesion Type<\/strong>: Skirt<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Skirt line count<\/strong>: 5<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Skirt Distance<\/strong>: 10.0mm<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Minimum Skirt\/Brim Length<\/strong>: 250.0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"445\" src=\"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Falda-borde-o-balsa-impresion-3d-configuracion-de-falda-en-cura-.webp\" alt=\"Cured Skirt Configuration\" class=\"wp-image-3053\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Cured Skirt Configuration<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When to wear a 3D printed skirt<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Use the Skirt option with materials that are easy to print and do not peel off the print bed<\/strong>, like PLA for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With technical or more difficult-to-print materials, you may have <strong>warping problems<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can see more about warping in this post: <a href=\"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/en\/how-to-avoid-warping\/\">Warping, corner lifting<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In these cases you must necessarily use another type of adhesion to the printing plate such as Edges or Brim to avoid this type of problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Border in 3D printing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Cured Border (also known as &quot;Brim&quot; in English) is the printing of continuous lines in the first layer, around the base of the model.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this case, the printed lines are connected to the 3D model, and this connection will reinforce and improve adhesion on the printing plate of the 3D printer.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"445\" src=\"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Falda-borde-o-balsa-impresion-3d-Borde-impreso-2-.webp\" alt=\"Skirt Edge or Raft example of Edges\" class=\"wp-image-3054\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Example of 3D Printed Border<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The edge just like the skirt <strong>can be used by advanced users to determine if the heated bed is correctly leveled<\/strong>, following exactly the same control steps already mentioned above in the \u00abSkirt\u00bb settings.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"445\" src=\"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Falda-borde-o-balsa-impresion-3d-Borde-impreso-cenital-.webp\" alt=\"Example of 14 turns of Border\" class=\"wp-image-3055\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Example of 14 turns of Border<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The more turns the edge has, the better the adhesion of the model to be printed, this can be beneficial when printing materials such as Petg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the Edge used for in 3D printing?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Cured Edge serves to improve the adhesion of the 3D model to the printing plate. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Using Edges on Cura drastically increases the success rate<\/strong> when printing with technical materials or more difficult to print such as PetG, Nylon, ABS among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Provides better adhesion and decreases the chances of the model coming unstuck from the print bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Border options are<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Printing Plate Adhesion Type<\/strong>: Edge<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Border Width<\/strong>: 8.0mm<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Border Line Count<\/strong>: 14 (laps)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>edge distance<\/strong>: 0.0mm<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Border only on the outside<\/strong>: (Tick)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"445\" src=\"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Falda-borde-o-balsa-impresion-3d-configuracion-de-Borde-en-cura-.webp\" alt=\"Cured Edge Configuration\" class=\"wp-image-3056\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Cured Edge Configuration<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When to use Border<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Use the \u201cEdge\u201d setting in Cura whenever you use materials like PetG, Nylon, ABS or any other 3D filament that is prone to warping, or peeling off the print bed.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to use Edge with this type of filaments because you will run the risk of the piece coming off the print bed or lifting in one of its corners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although there are many tricks to improve adhesion to the printing plate, <strong>this is one of the best<\/strong> <strong>and more recommended<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It should be noted that for any of the adhesion methods to the printing plate that you use <strong>the bed must be perfectly level<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Raft in 3D printing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The raft in 3D printing (Also known as &quot;Raft&quot; in English) is a configuration of Cura that when activated adds a base of 2 or more layers of printing below the model to be printed<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Create conveniently <strong>a flat surface below the 3D model<\/strong>, which can help with the sticking of objects.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"445\" src=\"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Falda-borde-o-balsa-impresion-3d-Balsa-impresa.webp\" alt=\"Skirt edge or raft examples of Balsa\" class=\"wp-image-3057\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Example of a 3D printed Raft<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this case <strong>objects are not printed directly on the print bed, but on top of the Raft<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"445\" src=\"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Falda-borde-o-balsa-impresion-3d-balsa-impresa-cenital-.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3058\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Once the Raft is printed, it must be discarded<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once the piece is printed, the raft must be unstuck and discarded.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"445\" src=\"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Falda-borde-o-balsa-impresion-3d-Balsa-impresa-frontal.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3059\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Example of 4 layers of 3D printed Balsa<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The downside of this system is that <strong>a little more 3D filament is wasted<\/strong> than with the other two methods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the Raft for?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The 3D printing raft is used to improve adhesion on the printing plate and correct possible errors with the leveling of the bed.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also helps to avoid deformation due to temperature difference (warping) in prints with 3D filaments such as ABS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can help stabilize 3D models with small parts that won&#039;t stick or peel off the print bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Configure Raft in Cura<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>In the \u201cprint bed adhesion\u201d settings window select the \u201cRaft\u201d option<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Balsa&#039;s default options are<\/strong>: (for 0.4mm nozzle)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Printing Plate Adhesion Type<\/strong>: Raft<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Additional raft margin<\/strong>: 15.0 mm (The distance around the model that will have a balsa can be lowered to avoid spending so much filament).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Balsa Smoothing<\/strong>: 5.0 mm (Controls how much the inside corners are rounded on the raft outline)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Raft air chamber<\/strong>: 0.3 mm (It is the space between the last layer of the raft and the first layer of the model)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Overlay the initial layers in Z<\/strong>: 0.15 mm (It serves to compensate the loss of material in the air gap)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Upper layers of the raft<\/strong>: 2 (Number of smooth layers above the first 2 of the raft, it is where the model rests)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Thickness of the upper layers of the raft<\/strong>: 0.2 mm (Layer thickness of upper layers)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Width of the top lines of the raft<\/strong>: 0.4 (Line width of top surface, usually equal to nozzle size)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>raft top spacing<\/strong>: 0.4mm (The gap must be equal to the line (nozzle) width to produce a solid surface)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Intermediate raft thickness<\/strong>: 0.3 mm (Thickness of the intermediate layer of the Balsa)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>raft intermediate line width<\/strong>: 0.8 mm (Width of the lines of the intermediate layer of the raft)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>raft spacing<\/strong>: 1.0mm (distance between the raft lines for the middle layer of the raft)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>raft base thickness<\/strong>: 0.24mm (Thickness of the raft base layer. This should be a thick layer that will adhere firmly to the build plate)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Raft Baseline Width<\/strong>: 0.8 mm (Width of the lines of the base layer of the raft. They must be thick lines to facilitate adhesion)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Raft baseline space<\/strong>: 1.6mm (Distance between raft lines for raft base layer. Wide spacing for removal of raft from plate)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>raft printing speed<\/strong>: 25.0 mm\/s (It is the speed at which the raft is printed)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Raft fan speed<\/strong>: 0.0 % (Fan speed for raft)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"445\" src=\"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Falda-borde-o-balsa-impresion-3d-configuracion-de-Balsa-en-cura-.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3060\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Raft configuration in Cura, <strong>you don&#039;t need to select them all<\/strong>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Balsa settings in Cura will have many options, <strong>you don&#039;t need to select them all<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When to use the Raft in Cura<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The raft can be used on very special occasions, such as <strong>when you have trouble leveling the bed<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another reason may be to avoid <strong>problems with the adherence of the pieces to the print bed<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The raft may not be one of the most used settings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The most normal thing is to use the &quot;Skirt&quot; with PLA and the &quot;Edges&quot; with Petg<\/strong> and other more technical 3D filaments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only when all options have failed would I recommend using a raft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Video on YouTube: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UC_pLBpwHu6fPRd5oxUxOEKQ\/videos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wave! creations<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre><div class=\"video-responsive\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/46Mn3871GGQ?start=158\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The last option in the list is \u201cNone\u201d, and this option is chosen when you don&#039;t want to use any of the options.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This can be useful when you want to print a large object and need to use the 100% the width of the print bed.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"445\" src=\"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Falda-borde-o-balsa-impresion-3d-configuracion-de-Ninguno-en-cura-.webp\" alt=\"Skirt edge or raft in cure\" class=\"wp-image-3061\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">By not using any adhesion, the spaces on the sides are freed<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since Cura reserves these spaces, choosing the option \u00ab<strong>None<\/strong>\u00bb the full width of the print bed can be accessed. In the case of Ender 3 printers the size of the bed is 23.5 cm and the entire space of the bed could be used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusions Skirt Edge or Raft:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Skirt:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Used with PLA filament<\/strong> and it is used to extrude filament before starting the print.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It helps when changing the color of the filament as it finishes extruding or pulling out the old filament.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is used to check that the printing bed is correctly leveled and that there are no adhesion problems to the bed.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Borders:<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Improves adhesion to the print bed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>They are used with PETG or ABS filament<\/strong> and other technical materials that have a tendency to deform or produce warping.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They also have the same benefits of filament purging and print bed leveling control as the Skirt lines.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Raft:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Improves adhesion to the print bed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>It is used only on very special occasions<\/strong>. (If you can&#039;t level the print bed well for example)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It can help with the adhesion of small parts of the models to be printed (including supports).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>None:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is chosen when you do not want to use any of the sticking options.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can take advantage of the space on the print bed in Cura.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Always use the Skirt and Borders with any type of material as needed.
