{"id":908,"date":"2022-01-25T14:07:39","date_gmt":"2022-01-25T17:07:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/?p=908"},"modified":"2023-09-04T15:10:47","modified_gmt":"2023-09-04T18:10:47","slug":"best-cura-settings-for-beginners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/en\/best-cura-settings-for-beginners\/","title":{"rendered":"Best Cura setups for beginners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The best Cura settings will allow you to make better 3D prints with fewer errors and a better time\/quality ratio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ultimaker cura is a software application designed to work with 3D printers, it is free software and you can find it by following this <a href=\"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/en\/ultimaker-cura-2\/\">link<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Print Settings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the Print Settings, if this is the first time you open Cura, you should select the custom option. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This will open more options that allow you to make changes to the print settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once this is done, a window will open with many options, which we will see one by one.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"459\" height=\"429\" src=\"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Configuraciones-basicas-de-Cura-ultimaker.jpg\" alt=\"Cura settings - print settings\" class=\"wp-image-918\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Basic print settings<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"458\" height=\"555\" src=\"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Configuraciones-avanzadas-de-Cura-ultimaker.jpg\" alt=\"Cura settings - Advanced settings\" class=\"wp-image-919\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Advanced print settings<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Quality<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The quality is determined by the layer height, an incorrect layer height can cause errors and undesirable results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Thinner layers = better quality = more print hours<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Thicker layers = lower quality = fewer print hours<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My recommendation is, unless it is an exception, to find a middle ground in the time\/quality relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this tab, you will modify only 3 options: <strong>layer height<\/strong>, <strong>initial layer height <\/strong>and <strong>line width<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>layer height<\/strong>: <strong>0.2<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>initial layer height<\/strong>: from <strong>0.16 to 0.2<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>line width<\/strong>: <strong>0.4<\/strong> (It must be equal to the diameter of your nozzle or nozzle)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"458\" height=\"550\" src=\"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Altura-de-capa-Cura-ultimaker.jpg\" alt=\"Cura Settings - Layer Height\" class=\"wp-image-920\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Cura Settings, Layer Height<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <strong>layer height<\/strong> You will choose the layer height of the entire print, from start to finish, according to the quality of your choice. The midpoint in relation to time\/quality would be a height of 0.2 mm because the layers of the print are not as noticeable and the time is considerably less than with thinner layers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>initial layer height<\/strong> refers to the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">first layer<\/span>, which is one of the most important of all printing. This height cannot be less than 0.16, unless you are already an expert and have full control of the extruder and a perfectly level bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A layer height lower than 0.16 can cause jams, since the nozzle is so stuck it will not allow the filament to exit correctly, causing the extruder steps to skip, making the famous &quot;Tac Tac Tac&quot; noise among other failures .<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He <strong>line width<\/strong> it will be easy to configure, since you will always have to place the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">nozzle size<\/span> that you have installed in the Hotend. If the Nozzle is 0.4 then that is the size of the Line Width. If it is not then you will put the one you have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Walls<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This setting can be set in millimeters from <strong>wall thickness<\/strong>, or in number of walls from <strong>wall line count<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The more walls a print has, the harder and more solid it will be, but it will also take longer to print.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> <strong>More walls = better hardness = more print hours<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> <strong>Less walls = less hardness = less printing hours<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My general recommendation would be to use between 2 and 4 walls and complement with the filling. But in the end it will always be your decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>wall thickness<\/strong>:  <strong>0.8mm<\/strong> (for 0.4 nozzles)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Wall Line Count<\/strong>: <strong>2<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Optimize the print order of walls<\/strong>: <strong>put tilde<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fill spaces between walls<\/strong>: <strong>Everywhere<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>horizontal expansion<\/strong>: <strong>0.0mm<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"458\" height=\"558\" src=\"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Configuracion-de-paredes-Cura-ultimaker.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-921\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">top or bottom<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It refers to the number of layers that we are going to put above and below. The amount chosen by default seems fine to me, but you can change it if necessary and put the amount you want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>top thickness<\/strong>: <strong>0.8mm<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>upper layers<\/strong>: <strong>4<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>bottom thickness<\/strong>: <strong>0.8mm<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>lower layers<\/strong>: <strong>4<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"457\" height=\"561\" src=\"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Configuracion-de-paredes-superiores-e-inferiores-Cura-ultimaker.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-922\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stuffed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A piece can be hollow or it can be solid, this will be determined by the amount of padding we choose for our pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you print statuettes or models, you may not need as much padding, but if instead you make technical pieces that need some kind of force or support, then you will use a denser padding according to your needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The amount of infill will influence the print time directly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>More padding = More print time<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Less Padding = Less Printing Time<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a general rule of thumb, in Cura setups you will fit between a 20% and 25% for either type of print. You can modify this at any time as you learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>fill density<\/strong>: <strong>20.0 %<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>fill pattern<\/strong>: <strong>Cubic<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>P<strong>fill overlap percentage<\/strong>: <strong>30.0 %<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Infill layer thickness<\/strong>: <strong>0.2mm<\/strong> (same as layer height)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"460\" height=\"560\" src=\"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Configuraciones-de-relleno-Cura-ultimaker.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-923\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Material<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here you will see everything related to the printing temperature and this will be directly related to the type of material you use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PLA, PETG, NYLON are going to use completely different temperatures, so it will be important to know which material you are working with, since even the temperatures of the hot bed will also be different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>PLA<\/strong> = 200<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>petg<\/strong> = 230\u00b0\/60\u00b0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>NYLON<\/strong> = 250\u00b0\/100\u00b0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are general numbers, each type and brand of filament may vary. <strong>including color in color<\/strong>. You should always pay attention to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">manufacturer&#039;s recommended temperatures<\/span>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I recomend you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thingiverse.com\/search?q=temp+tower&amp;page=1&amp;type=things&amp;sort=relevant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">download a temperature tower from Thingiverse<\/a> and follow the tutorial in the following post: <a href=\"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/en\/temperature-tower\/\">Temperature tower: Better quality in your 3D prints<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For PLA you will use these parameters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>printing temperature<\/strong>: <strong>205.0 \u00b0C<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Initial Layer Printing Temperature<\/strong>: <strong>205.0 \u00b0C<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Initial printing temperature<\/strong>: <strong>205.0 \u00b0C<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>final printing temperature<\/strong>: <strong>205.0 \u00b0C<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Printing plate temperature<\/strong>: <strong>50.0\u00b0C<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Plate temperature in the initial layer<\/strong>: <strong>50.0\u00b0C<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Flow<\/strong>: <strong>100.0 %<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"456\" height=\"560\" src=\"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Configuracion-de-temperatura-Cura-ultimaker.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-924\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Speed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speed also plays a role in determining the quality of a printed part. And it is that, based on the type of printer that we have and the type of filament that we use, the faster we will <strong>lose a bit of quality<\/strong>unless you are already a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">advanced user<\/span> and know how to modify certain necessary parameters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If I had to recommend a print speed<\/strong> for beginners, with a good time\/quality ratio, <strong>it would have to be between 50 mm\/s and 60 mm\/s<\/strong>. Above these values, I would recommend them only for testing and really knowing what the limits of your printer are, in the time\/quality relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>print speed<\/strong>: <strong>60.0mm\/s<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>fill speed<\/strong>: <strong>60.0mm\/s<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>wall speed<\/strong>: <strong>30.0mm\/s<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Velocity of displacement<\/strong>: <strong>150.0mm\/s<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>initial layer speed<\/strong>: <strong>20.0mm\/s<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Skirt\/edge speed<\/strong>: <strong>20.0mm\/s<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"455\" height=\"560\" src=\"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Configuraciones-de-velocidad-Cura-ultimaker.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-925\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Displacement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are many options in scrolling, but for now that you&#039;re just getting started we&#039;re going to use the following options:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>enable retraction<\/strong>: <strong>mark tilde<\/strong> (very important)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>retraction distance<\/strong>: <strong>5.0mm<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Retraction speed<\/strong>: <strong>45.0mm\/s<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>hairstyle mode<\/strong>: <strong>Not on the outer surface, <\/strong>or in <strong>All<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Avoid printed parts when scrolling<\/strong>: <strong>mark tilde<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Avoid supports when scrolling<\/strong>: <strong>mark tilde<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Z jump on retraction<\/strong>: <strong>do not mark<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"459\" height=\"561\" src=\"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Configuraciones-de-desplazamiento-Cura-ultimaker.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-926\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not using the enable retraction option may cause the <strong>thread formation<\/strong> plastic throughout the print, something that is quite annoying to clean. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shrinkage distances are the most common to use with PLA, although there may be other factors that cause stringing in prints, depending on the material and the amount of moisture they have absorbed, as well as not using proper ventilation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To better complement, I invite you to read the following publications: <a href=\"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/en\/threads-in-3d-printing-and-how-to-avoid-them\/\">Threads in 3D printing (and how to avoid them)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/en\/moisture-in-3d-printing-filaments\/\">Moisture in 3D printing filaments: Main consequences<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Avoiding supports and printed parts when moving can help prevent the nozzle from accidentally hitting the print causing it to accidentally come off the base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Refrigeration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Enable print cooling<\/strong>: <strong>mark tilde<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>fan speed<\/strong>: <strong>100 %<\/strong> (50% for Petg)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"457\" height=\"561\" src=\"https:\/\/impresion3d.website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Configuraciones-de-refrigeracion-Cura-ultimaker.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-927\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Medium<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, this option will only be necessary in the case that your print has overhangs greater than 45\u00b0 and they need a support, because otherwise they would print in the air and your work would be spoiled.
